Convict +

"Sit", Kerrigan said non-expressively to his first case that morning. A pale meager guy with sunk-in blood-red eyes. Strains and open wounds all over his body. His clothes were grey, dirty, worn out and showed several laces. "Whip-cured... before I could take a look at him...", he thought to himself. The convict already appeared to be a difficult case. He could tell from the fact that he was tortured, but he would be broken anyway. No one resists the system. There is no way out except through surrender or death.

Subject #654-487-G:

  • Shows uncooperative and absent behavior.
  • Although physical issues are to be considered, the primary motivation seems to be a disruptive distortion of self-image and/or reality.
  • Files indicate long term care is inevitable, use of severe force is also an option.
  • Subject is classified as hardly dispensable.
"Quite a rank", he thought to himself. In all his years as Senior-IRMC (Officer for Information Retrieval and Mental Care) a "hardly dispensable" classification had occurred only twice to him.

There are many ways of names one can have. There's not just the one on your ID. That one the system was generous to lend us. Reminding us that it still owns it but lends it to you, "for the span of your lifetime. You must not destroy or give away your ID, except for government order."

There are other kinds of names like the names that only a few know - nicknames - or the names your classmates give you. Names that no one could associate with an actual person but the person itself - shadows. The media creates new names for people every day. Whether you want it or not. Cute names, silly names. Names that are honored by millions of people.

Both had names, both were special, both had names in almost all that ways. The first one was a terrorist leader, the second one a hero.

Now, there was this third guy. He had no name in any way. That was most disturbing. He had never even heard about a man without identity. Sure there were these seldom cases where a mentally disturbed woman would prevent registration of her pregnancy and go renegade with her unborn child. No one made it for even 24 hours.

Required Information:

  • Name
  • Age
  • Date and place of birth
  • Parents

Furthermore all allocable information about past and present activities, motivation and all his contacts.

A detailed analysis of potential danger caused by the individual or its contacts is required.

"Good day may friend!", he greeted the convict with a warm and soft voice. "I am Gordon Kerrigan. I see we have a little trouble finding the right place for you in the system. You see, anyone can live within the system, even you."

"We just need a name to call you and the profession you are currently pursuing." - Seconds passed.

"Would you like to help us putting you back where you belong?"

"What is your name?"

"Do you understand?" - Still no reaction. Not even a twinkle or a sudden uncontrolled movement, although he had wounds all over his body.

"Look, I want to set something clear. If I cannot verify that you understand me and are in a conscious state of mind I will do everything to bring you into this modus. That would imply severe dangers for you, neural and psychological." - The convict suddenly nodded clearly.

"At least something", he thought, "a man that understands me is a lot easier to break as one who does not."

"So you rather choose to remain silent?" - Another few seconds passed.

"I'll count that as a yes."

"You know what the trouble is? All we have is a few questions and all you have to do is answer them. Nothing more. If you had been more cooperative yet, you would have avoided a lot of pain. As far as I can tell. No one had himself killed before just because he didn't tell somebody his name. So what about it?"

"My name is of no concern to you." The convict suddenly replied with a harsh voice.

"Well, I would prefer to consider that myself. Anyway, I don't think you are in the position to judge those things."

"And still, my name is of no concern to you."

"I sincerely doubt that. We will get all the information we want in the process of your treatment." - Kerrigan had expected such reaction. It was unlikely that the convict would simply tell him what he wanted to know. The decision he had to make now was wether to attempt a long subtle process of information retrieval, including drug use and non-lethal physical and psychological torture, or the straight way of mainly physical torture and drugs. Considering the importance of this character he decided to go the fast way. Taking of a few body-parts and excessive drugs should do it, just be careful that he survives.

"Well my friend, I guess you decided for the bad run." - He rose from his seat and went around the table took the convicts hand roughly and fixed it at the table.

"I guess this is your last chance to answer a few questions to me... What is your name?" - He took a long razor-sharp blade out of his case and held it over the convicts thumb. With a light quick move he cut a small wound where he was going to take the finger.

The convict grinned. "Go ahead, we have to stay on schedule, don't we?"

"You're right", replied Kerrigan. It took several strokes to cut it of. He sealed the wound a few seconds later, with an invention of his own. An apparatus similar to a flashlight with a heat-plate attached on the front to desolate the wound. It was hot enough to cause extreme pain, though stopping the loss of blood, but to avoid a shock of the nervous system not too hot.

Still, the convict smiled.
